What's New this Year?
The 2022 BRZ lineup is fully redesigned this year. Upgrades are highlighted by a new 2.4-liter engine that replaces the 2.0-liter engine from previous model years, an updated interior with a larger focus on the driver, more technology and safety features, and other enhancements throughout each of the two trim levels.
Performance
Engine and Transmission
The new Subaru BRZ lineup gets an all-new engine that delivers a sportier and more agile performance. This year, all models come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine that delivers 228-horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque. That's 23-horsepower and 28 pounds-feet of torque more than in previous years, resulting in a more responsive, exciting, and fun driving experience whether you're darting around the city, cruising the highway, or kicking up dirt on back roads. The engine can be paired to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters that you can use to enjoy simulated manual shifting when you want to get more engaged.
Rear-Wheel Drive and Other Performance Focuses
The Subaru BRZ is the only vehicle in the Subaru lineup to come equipped with rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive. But that's what's intended, as all BRZ models have a lightweight design with an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution between front and back. Rear-wheel drive also allows the BRZ to achieve a classic sports car feel, working hand in hand with the lower placed Boxer engine to achieve its optimal center of gravity and stability through tight corners. All models also come with a retuned, track-tested suspension.
Design
All Subaru BRZ models stand out with a unique sports coupe design, featuring an elongated front bonnet and short back end that lets it stand out in any crowd. 17-inch wheels come standard and 18-inch wheels are available with high-performance summer tires. All models come with LED headlights, keyless entry, and a push-button start. Inside the cabin, you'll enjoy a cockpit like design for the driver and front passenger, with driver-centric features that are catered towards convenience behind the wheel. Simulated suede and leather upholstery are available on the Limited model.
Technology
All Subaru BRZ models come equipped with a Starlink multimedia system on an 8-inch touchscreen display. With standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, you can connect your smartphone wirelessly using Bluetooth or plug-in a USB cord. Once connected, you'll have full control over calls, music, apps, messages, maps, and more, keeping you connected on the go.
Subaru BRZ Size
Were many sports cars go prominently muscular, 2019 BRZ keeps things smaller and more lightweight. However, it's still a firm plant, with a lengthy 101.2-inch wheelbase and more-than-59 to just-over-60-inch front and rear tracks. Plus, with only 4.9 inches of ground clearance, you can expect aerodynamics the likes of which you may not find elsewhere. Moreover, with a 76.5-cubic-foot interior, there's more than enough room for two to enjoy the trip.
Subaru BRZ Longevity
If you're concerned about depreciation putting a damper on your drive-time thrills, in the driver's seat of a new BRZ, you needn't be. IHS Markit data from 2008 to 2017 shows us, for example, that around 97% of Subaru sports cars like these, sold in the last decade, are still owning the road today. That's not to mention that, according to ALG, Subaru was the top brand of 2018 for Residual Value, and, per Kelley Blue Book, it's the most trusted brand among buyers for four years running. As accolades go, these are assurances of quality.
Subaru BRZ Safety Features
BRZ is nothing if not the height of driving security for 2019. Its vehicle stability and traction control systems not only keep the ride on even footing, backed by dependable grip on the road. It also features a track mode to rein in the fun on the proverbial circuit. Count on the stopping power you need when you need it to boot, thanks to a four-wheel anti-lock braking system with brake assist and a standard tire pressure monitoring system to help you keep your set at the right PSI. Looking for the kind of controlled halts that performance enthusiasts crave? You'll find them a breeze in a BRZ model equipped with an available Brembo performance braking system. Heated power side mirrors and LED headlights help you keep an eye on things through foul Constitution State weather, and an advanced Subaru airbag system can provide redundant layers of protection, should worse come to worst out there.
